2013 Hippocrates Open and NHS short-listing

The judges met on 25th March at the offices of the Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine to agree short-lists for the NHS and Open categories for the 2013 Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine.

Awards will be announced by the judges on 18th May, 2013 at the Wellcome Collection in London at the end of the 4th International Symposium on Poetry and Medicine

NHS awards

Five poets have been short-listed for the 2013 awards. For all five poets, it is their first time to feature within the Hippocrates Awards.

The judges agreed a further 18 commendations. Eight are new to the Hippocrates Prize. Three have previously won top 3 awards in the Hippocrates Prize and a further six have previously been commended by Hippocrates Prize judges. One of this year's featured poets was commended for two of her entries.

Open awards

Four poets have been short-listed for the 2013 awards, one from New Zealand, one from the UK, and 2 from the USA - one from California and one from Massachusetts. For all 4 poets, this is their first time to feature within the Hippocrates Awards.

The judges agreed a further 20 commendations in the Open category. Seven were from the USA - four from California, and one each from Texas, Virginia and New York. One each were from Israel, Ireland and Scotland and 10 from England, from the Isle of Wight to Yorkshire.

Awards will be announced by the judges at the 4th International Symposium on Poetry and Medicine at the Wellcome Rooms in London on Saturday 18th May.

Judging for the Hippocrates Prize is anonymous and entries are not presented to the judges in name order to avoid clustering of winning or commended entries.

The 2013 Hippocrates Anthology of the 47 winning and commended poems will be launched after the Awards Symposium at the Wellcome Rooms in London on Saturday 18th May.

Winning and commended poets are entitled to one free copy of that year's anthology.
