Nick MacKinnon wins 2013 Forward Prize for best single poem

The winners of the 2013 Forward Prize for poetry were announced by Jeanette Winterson at the South Bank Centre on Tuesday 1st October. 

The £1,000 prize for Best Single Poem went to Nick MacKinnon for The Metric System, first published in The Warwick Review.

Winterson said "Tackling what can't be quantified is what poetry is good at and sums up everything that poetry is trying to do."

Former psychogeriatric nurse and Winchester College Mathematics and English teacher MacKinnon won the £5000 2012 Hippocrates NHS Prize for Poetry and Medicine.

The prize for Best First Collection was awarded to Emily Berry, for Dear Boy (Faber and Faber). 

Michael Symmons Roberts won the 2013 Forward Prize for Best Collection for Drysalter (Cape Poetry), a book of 150 poems.
